Challenges of nurses in observing standard precautions against infectious pathogens

Background : Standard precautions aimed at protecting members of the treatment team from the occupational hazards they face on a daily basis have been recommended to members of the treatment team in recent years, but evidence indicates that these guidelines are not fully followed. The purpose of this study is to provide a clear of the challenges related to non-compliance with standard precautions by nurses. Method: Present narrative review study by searching the databases of Science direct, web of sciences, SID, and PUBMED with related keywords including standard precautions, adherence, compliance, infection control, nosocomial infection, biological hazards, occupational hazards, nurses Infectious diseases were performed in both Persian and English from the beginning of 2000 to November 2020. Results: Based on the evaluation of 15 articles based on the objectives of the study, nurseschr('39') challenges in observing standard precautions against pathogens were classified into 6 groups. The above challenges are: 1- Lack of access and lack of resources required to follow standard precautions, 2- Formation of emerging infectious diseases, 3- Incompatibility of equipment required to comply with standard precautions and inefficiency with them, 4- Insufficient knowledge about standard precautions 5. Numerous roles and responsibilities and limited time, 6- Formation of new risks and dangers following standard precautions. Conclusion: Considering the factors affecting the observance of standard precautions among nurses, especially in different pandemic conditions of infectious diseases, it is necessary for policy makers, officials and managers of the health system, especially nursing managers, to facilitate and eliminate these known factors. In order to promote the health of the workplace and the health of the nurseschr('39') professions, provide the necessary planning to provide the appropriate resources and platform for the implementation of these standards
